Philanthropy

Often, under-funded state courts are forced to rush through cases, and if the client in question is a child, this can have huge consequences.  Misrepresented children can ricochet between foster homes for years because no one is there to advocate for them; this is where CASA steps in. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. They are trained community volunteers appointed by a judge to speak up for abused and neglected children in court. With the information provided by CASA volunteers, judges are able to make informed and timely decisions as to what is best for the child so these children still have a chance at the best childhood possible. Every year, CASA volunteers help approximately 280,000 abused or neglected children find safe and permanent homes. To learn more about CASA please visit their website.

Theta college and alumnae chapters help by raising money for CASA programs, providing office support, making toys or items for CASA children, hosting events for CASA children, or by becoming CASA volunteers themselves.

The Delta Omicron chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta holds several fundraising events each year including a taco dinner, raffle contest, holiday gift wrapping, and Valentine's gift delivery service in order to raise money for the local CASA office located in Birmingham. We also hold an annual toy drive during the holiday season to provide gifts for the CASA children, as well as drives during the year to provide the CASA kids and volunteers with comforting items that let them know we are thinking about them.

Thetas at Alabama are also very involved in service to the Tuscaloosa community.  We donate to the Salvation Army and have a regular route with Tuscaloosa Meals on Wheels.  Many members are involved with programs such as Best Buddies, Tuscaloosa mentoring, Bama PAWS, etc.  For a complete list of member involvement, please see the campus involvement page.
